The North Star
Every great business knows where it would like to be in 10 years, even if at one point or another it may change. Every year businesses create annual plans that are quickly forgotten or “pivoted” until they cease to be relevant. A great North Star can help solve these inconsistencies when it comes to team objectives.
The North Star is a single objective, milestone, or metric that your organization as a whole wants to hit in 10 years. It should be posted in the office and most importantly it should be aligned on a monthly basis, let alone annually. When teams understand where the company is headed they are now able to contextualize where they fit into the plan. Teams need direction not micromanagement, so by setting long-term vision and allowing creativity and flexibility with the in-between companies see much better results.
A good North Star should be a statement that is expressed with a clear timeline, definition of success, and should be written as it has already been achieved.
